After completing 27 years of military service and maintaining over 30 years in recovery, I was introduced to art therapy during one of my PTSD treatment sessions. Integrating art into my healing journey has led to profound progress, demonstrating its powerful role in fostering recovery and resilience. Artwork For the Soul is an alternative art program to reduce violence in areas that need it the most.

AFTS is the ultimate solution for communities impacted by violence, substance use, and emotional trauma. Through the transformative power of art-based counseling our programs provide a structured pathway to healing, empowerment and long-term behavioral change. We address the root causes of pain and disengagement by helping individuals rediscover purpose, self-worth and connection. Unlike traditional interventions AFTS heals from within. We believe that when the soul heals, the mind will follow-creating stronger individuals, safer communities, and lasting social impact.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

My artistic journey started around 2019 during my PTSD treatment. Many times when I sat listening to my therapist I would be doodling on a pad and I realized how comforting it was especially when the topics discussed were hard. Then it hit me that if I can find comfort in art so can so many other people and I felt the need to share it. I started sharing healing through art when I retired from the military and moved to Rochester, NY. After exhibiting one of my pieces in the downtown library I was asked if I would be interested in giving classes and the journey began. Two years later Artwork For the Soul has blossomed into a program for not only the libraries but also community organizations. The biggest attribute is learning how to ask for help and realizing it is a "we" program. I must thank Urban League of Rochester for their dedication in helping entrepreneurs and opening doors I never imagined would have opened for me. I attended my first gala with Stella Foundation and continued networking. I attribute my success to networking, giving back and listening to our communities. My long-term goal is to open my own practice and create cultural centers in urban communities that can’t afford art galleries or museums. This center will be somewhere individuals can come and learn about how interconnected we all are and even contribute to the healing process through art, dance, music, and writing. Somewhere to reflect on violence without reproducing it, through embodiment and reflection. A place to come in out of the cold and receive therapy to learn how to overcome adversity by turning it into something beautiful. Artwork For the Soul Centers will be in as many states as possible.
