Doris Thomas is the Founder and CEO of Never The Less, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering at-risk teen girls and young women to discover their purpose, power, and authentic selves. A true visionary, Doris describes herself as a “Dream Manager,” committed to awakening the seemingly impossible dreams of today’s youth. Through programs that inspire, challenge, and uplift, she helps young women recognize their inherent value and believe in their ability to shape their own futures. Never The Less exists as a direct reflection of this mission—to nurture confidence, resilience, and self-worth in the next generation.

After retiring from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Doris courageously pursued the vision placed on her heart to serve and mentor teen girls in her community. Based at the Seven Hills Neighborhood House in Cincinnati, Ohio, Never The Less provides a safe and affirming environment where young women are loved, guided, and encouraged to grow. Doris firmly believes that the girls she serves are chosen, each possessing unique gifts, talents, and destiny. As a shepherd and mentor, she leads with compassion, faith, and unwavering belief in their potential.

Doris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Rust College and brings decades of leadership, public speaking, and innovative thinking to her work. Her commitment extends beyond her organization through volunteer service and community involvement, including work with juvenile detention programs. Driven by purpose and fueled by faith, Doris Thomas continues to be a powerful force for transformation, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless young women and the community she serves.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith, purpose-driven leadership, compassion, and persistence, along with my commitment to listening to young people, meeting them where they are, and never giving up on them. I also credit my ability to adapt our mission to provide long-term educational, emotional, and life-changing support when systems fall short.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to stay rooted in my faith and purpose, listen to the community you serve, and lead with integrity—because true impact comes from serving people, not titles.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women entering this industry to lead with compassion, be patient with progress, trust their calling, and remember that real change takes time—persistence, purpose, consistency, and love truly make the difference.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is securing sustainable funding while addressing systemic barriers, recurring cycles of detention, and the deep trauma faced by at-risk youth. At the same time, there are powerful opportunities through early-intervention education, school partnerships, creative arts, and community-based violence-prevention programs to expand impact and build long-term support.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are faith, service, compassion, integrity, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child, while creating safe spaces where young girls feel valued, respected, and empowered. I’m also passionate about community service, mentoring, advocacy for vulnerable youth, and building environments where children can thrive both emotionally and socially.
