What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a blend of relentless curiosity and strategic persistence. Early on, I recognized that being the 'smartest person in the room' with data wasn't enough; I had to be the most resilient person in the room when it came to building bridges. Throughout my career—including the years I spent earning my MBA while working full-time—I’ve had to cultivate a high level of professional agility. I’ve thrived in complex, high-stakes environments by prioritizing relationship-building and proactively engaging with leadership to ensure the 'Voice of the Consumer' was heard and acted upon.
Ultimately, my growth is a result of my ability to 'read the room' as well as I read the data. I’ve focused on turning technical expertise into a strategic partnership, ensuring that I wasn't just a participant in the business, but an essential driver of its outcomes. Whether navigating cross-functional friction or adapting to shifting market trends, I’ve relied on a foundation of continuous learning and a refusal to settle for 'good enough' insights.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Early in my career, coming from a heavy Statistics background at Rutgers, I believed that if the data was perfect, the work would speak for itself. I spent years focused on 'cranking out' flawless analytics, thinking that was the only path to recognition.
The best advice I ever received came from a mentor who saw me struggling to get my projects across the finish line: 'Allison, your empathy is your most valuable data point, but it only works if you build the bridge to the person sitting across from you.'
That shifted my entire perspective. I realized that a great report won’t move the needle if you haven’t cultivated a partnership with your stakeholders. It taught me to stop being just a 'data processor' and start being a 'human translator.' Today, whether I’m leading an insights agenda for a global brand like Samsung, advising a founder at Conscious Venture Lab, or tutoring an adult or a younger learner in literacy, I apply that same lesson. I use the evidence to validate the 'what,' but I use empathy and relationship-building to communicate the 'so what.' You have to understand the human before you can influence the consumer.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women entering this industry to focus on building both technical expertise and strong business acumen. Be proactive, seek out mentors, and develop confidence in your perspective while learning to clearly communicate the value of your work. Equally important is networking, cultivating relationships, and staying adaptable as technology and business needs continue to evolve.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The Challenge: Moving from "Shared Service" to "Strategic Signal"
The biggest challenge is shifting the perception of insights from a 'cost center' or shared service to a strategic growth engine. In many organizations, research is treated as a reactive tool to validate decisions already made. The real difficulty—and the real necessity—is demonstrating a clear ROI by aligning research frameworks directly with executive KPIs. It’s about moving past just delivering 'data' to providing the 'single source of truth' that de-risks million-dollar bets in highly competitive categories like Home Tech and IoT.
The Opportunity: The Intersection of AI and Human Empathy
The greatest opportunity lies in the ethical and strategic integration of AI into the research lifecycle. While AI allows us to process massive datasets and identify patterns with unprecedented speed, the real 'white space' is using that efficiency to free up time for deeper, human-centered discovery. We have a chance to position insights teams as true business partners who don't just report on what happened, but use a blend of advanced analytics and radical empathy to predict what consumers will need next. For me, the win is pairing 'evidence' with 'empathy' to create products that actually improve lives.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
At my core, I am driven by the intersection of empathy, evidence, and equity.
In my professional life, I value purpose-driven collaboration. I don't believe insights should exist in a vacuum; they must serve a greater strategic goal. My work is rooted in the belief that when we truly listen to the 'human' behind the data, we create better outcomes for both the business and the consumer. I prioritize integrity in how I represent the voice of the customer, ensuring that executive decisions are de-risked by honest, multi-sourced evidence.
In my personal life and community work, I am deeply committed to empowerment through literacy. Whether I am working with adults or supporting younger learners, I believe that clear communication is the ultimate tool for independence. This passion for 'deciphering complexity' is the common thread in everything I do. It keeps me grounded in radical empathy—the ability to meet someone exactly where they are, understand their unique goals, and provide the framework they need to succeed.
Ultimately, I value continuous improvement. Whether I’m refining a business model for a startup at Conscious Venture Lab or helping a learner build their confidence, I am energized by the process of turning 'I don’t know' into 'I understand.'
